In my time at Clio, I've had the opportunity to engage with complex challenges and nuances of designing modern financial solutions for legal professionals. This write up focuses on some of my work on Clio Payments, designed to help lawyers accept online and in-person payments.

I explore the challenges we faced, the methodologies we employed, and the solutions that not only enhanced payments experience but also optimized efficiency of our roadmap.

Chapter 1: Getting paid faster

Collecting payments can be a frustrating experience as a lawyer. I worked on features that improve a client's payment experience, so there's one less obstacle to firms getting paid. With Digital Wallets, clients can pay their bill with Apple Pay or Google Pay in a few clicks.

With Digital Wallets, clients don't have to enter card details or billing information.

The team ran an experiment with digital wallets against a control cohort and saw an average of 3% increased conversion and within the first 25 days, the test cohort got paid 4% faster. I also worked on QR codes on bills, letting clients scan a QR code on their bill and pay quickly on their phone.

Chapter 2: Payments sign-up flow improvements

Even the best payment features won't hit the mark if the sign-up process isn't smooth. Two big problems with the sign-up form today; it's built inside of Clio Manage making it difficult to reuse for other products that may have payments features and, the code is fragile, making it time consuming to adapt for new regions.

That’s why we refactored and redesigned the sign-up flow to make it more flexible — both in code and user experience — which will help us expand internationally much faster and reduce maintenance costs.
